Pain is a ubiquitous health problem, the impact of which is far-reaching. From a biopsychosocial perspectice, pain is viewed as an experience with biologica, psychological and social derivatives. Comprehensive pain treatment programs involving interdisciplinary, multimodal treatment approaches are often required for complex and disabling pain conditions. Palliative care is comprehensive, active care of patients with advanced disease or serious illness and their families; it aims to improve quality of life based on patients and family needs and demands and is practiced by a competent multidisciplinary team. The transition to palliative care is a significant adjustment for patients and their families. Pain management in palliative care is important clinical problem. This course aims to bring together experts from different part of the world working on pain management and palliative medicine in order to present current diagnostic and treatment modalities. Some of the topics at the course are epidemiology of chronic pain, current neurobiological and psychological concepts of different chronic pain syndromes, diagnostic procedures and assessment of the patients, societal impact of pain, different treatment modalities for chronic pain patients, pain in palliative medicine; palliative medicine today, multidisciplinary team in palliative medicine, ethical issues in palliative medicine.

SOME USEFUL INFORMATION:
All lectures will take place at big lecture hall of IUC (groundfloor, first hall on the right).
Exception is 6 May 2011 only (due to another course at IUC) - lectures will take place at hall no. 2 at the 1st floor.
All workshops will take place at halls no. 2 and 5 at the 1st floor.
Halls are airconditioned and have projector and computer.
A small exhibition will take place in front of big hall.
Registration is available every day at the IUC groundfloor, 30 minutes before lectures start.
All course attendees will receive IUC diplomas signed by course directors – different for active and passive participants.
Welcome Cocktail will be held on 1 May 2011 at IUC Atrium.
Lunches will be held at Mimoza Restaurant 3-7 May 2011(located near IUC; http://www.esculap-teo.hr/restaurant_mimoza.html. Drinks should be ordered and paid on the spot by the clients themselves.
