In memorium: Prof. Peter Kampits

The former Director General of the Inter-University Centre Dubrovnik Professor Peter Kampits, passed away on 16 June this year.

Professor Peter Kampits (1942–2026) was an Austrian philosopher and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Vienna. His scholarly work focused on existentialism, medical ethics, and social philosophy, and throughout his career he contributed to academic life through teaching, research, and university leadership. He served as Head of the Institute of Philosophy and was the founding Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Education at the University of Vienna. He was also actively involved in a number of national and international academic organisations and initiatives.

At the IUC, he was the co-director of the programme MittelEuropa ever since 1998, bringing to the IUC his colleagues and encouraging critical reflection on questions of European identity, culture, and shared intellectual traditions. From 2007 to 2017 he served as an IUC Deputy Director General. Following the completion of his mandate, he remained closely connected to the Centre as a member of the IUC Association, continuing to support the IUC's work.

Peter Kampits will be remembered not only for his academic contribution, but also for his kindness, openness, and good humour. It was always a pleasure to be in his company, and he brought a positive spirit to every encounter.

We remember Professor Peter Kampits with profound respect and gratitude. His legacy will remain woven into the history of the Inter-University Centre and into the memories of the generations of scholars who had the privilege to work with him.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all who mourn his passing.
