Course description:

Minoritized and Marginalized Language Varieties in the Digital Sphere

The seminar will include papers that focus on the dynamic relationship between digital communication and offline linguistic and social practices with a particular interest in the presence, form and use of marginalized and minoritized language varieties in digital environments. The accepted contributions will examine language use in digital media, particularly focusing on how digital communication impacts the preservation, transformation, or revitalization of minoritized languages. Topics may include but are not limited to the role of social media in shaping language use and identity in marginalized communities, the ways digital discourse practices reflect or challenge offline hierarchies, and the implications of digital communication for language maintenance or shift. We also encourage analyses and critical reflections on how communication in the virtual sphere influences offline communication, community identity, and linguistic structure. We welcome interdisciplinary perspectives that engage critically with how the online world reshapes the linguistic and social fabric of communities in tangible ways. Proposals from diverse geographical and linguistic contexts, employing diverse methodological approaches and theoretical frameworks, are encouraged.
