Course description:

This training school will give an overview of basic knowledge as well as recent research results at the following topics:

  • Description of the impact/crash or HSR application in sectors such as Aerospace, Automotive, Transportation, Marine, Energy or others.
  • Introduction and description of the basic typical failure modes in polymers and composites which affect the in service or general behaviour of such materials with particular focus on the HSR. Introduction of polymer chemistry (matrices) and different fiber reinforcement systems.
  • Description of the phenomenological, macromolecular behaviour and mechanisms when polymer and related composites are loaded in high strain rate conditions.
  • HSR behaviour and specific performance of polymer and composites reinforced with different type of fibres.
  • HSR behaviour of hybrid laminate such as GLARE, hybrid reinforcements, titanium/FRP, C/K or C/G composites)
  • HRS performance of the sandwich and foams.
  • Introduction to nano and micro fillers; interleaved lamina and the effect of nano, micro and interleaved film on the impact and HSR behaviour of polymers and composites.
  • Micro and meso-scale composite materials' characteristics that affect macroscale behaviour under high strain rate. Framework for implementing multiscale effects.
  • High strain-rate response of additively manufactured polymers and composites (lattice, self-healing)
  • Future trends: new material, novel configurations, and architectures
