Access to large data sets of many different types has become a central part of biomedical research. Technologies such as genome-sequencing, microarrays, proteomics and structural genomics are changing the way that many researchers perform their experiments: whereas previously, collecting data was a major bottleneck to progress, analysing it is now the bottleneck, and many researchers lack the training to deal with this. This course will bring together the combined experience of the experts in the field of bioinformatics and training, with researchers who have no formal bioinformatics training but deeply rely on using bioinformatics resources and tools. The purpose of this course will be to provide a broad introduction to bioinformatics data resources with an emphasis on the practical applications through hands on tutorial based sessions. These will explain to the trainees when, why and how to use the resources and tools in their research. Several resources will be covered spanning genomics to systems biology. The summer school will combine teaching some of the general concepts that are important for understanding how to make the most of the data (for example, principles of sequence searching) with hands-on experience using the databases with a range of widely applicable case studies. In this way, use of the resources is presented with reference to biological questions. This course also represents a wonderful opportunity to expose the Croatian research environment and all participants to the excellent list of speakers and trainers, whom themselves represent strong landmarks in bioinformatics.
