In a ceremony in the Presidential Palace in Zagreb on 27 November 2006, the President of the Republic of Croatia, Stjepan Mesić, awarded Dr. Peter Fischer-Appelt (University of Hamburg) the Order of the Croatian Star with the Effigy of Rudjer Boskovic for his merits in promoting the international position and reputation of the Republic of Croatia in the world, through scientific cooperation, as well as for his special contribution to the affirmation and development of the Inter-University Centre in Dubrovnik.

The ceremony was also attended by Mr. Laurids Hölscher, Deputy Ambassador of Germany in Croatia, the President's advisors, members of the award board, and on behalf of Inter-University Centre Dr. Krunoslav Pisk, Director General, and Ms. Berta Dragičević, Executive Secretary.

Dr. Peter Fischer-Appelt has served the IUC in many capacities through the years ever since in 1971 he came to Dubrovnik on the invitation of Academician Ivan Supek to participate in establishing the IUC. From the very beginning of the IUC, he served as member of Executive Committee, and from 1981 to 1998 as President of IUC Council. He is a member of the IUC Association. He is Honorary Member of the IUC.

As President of the University of Hamburg (from 1970 to 1991) and as member of the German Rectors' Conference and DAAD (German service for international exchange) he successfully promoted the IUC in German academic circles and also brought a number of distinguished German universities as Members to the Centre. With his contacts in Germany, Dr. Fischer-Appelt secured significant support to the IUC from a number of respected German foundations, which sponsored participation of several hundred German students and professors in IUC programmes. Thanks to the engagement and connections of Dr. Fischer-Appelt through the years, German partners have been very much present and active in the work of the Centre.

During war years, Dr. Fischer-Appelt was in constant contact with the IUC and Dubrovnik, and sent numerous appeals of support to the Centre and to the city. Together with several German universities, the University of Hamburg organised a number of actions to support the Centre in war and post-war years, gathering help for equipment and reconstruction of parts of the building, devastated in the bombing of 6th December 1991.

From the post-war period until today, Dr. Fischer-Appelt has contributed very much to the revival of the Centre and the continuation of its mission, as well as to its promotion in international circles.

From 1971 until today, Dr. Peter Fischer-Appelt has visited Dubrovnik several hundred times and even today comes regularly to the city many times every year, for work in the governing bodies of the Centre, as well as because of his special affection for Dubrovnik and his respect for its cultural tradition.
